 Huh
I have the live cd and boot with it on a Via epia 800 which has a 256 MB compact flash card.
BSD boots and I get several options and the timer ticking etc.
However, what am I supposed to do.
I am trying to install pfSense onto the compact flash for the firewall.
I know nothing about BSD.
I thought I found the "how to" on this stuff, but I must have missed something.
Can someone point me in the right direction.
I tried monowall and get the usual menu of options, but couldnt get that to work,
so I wanted to try this.
Setup: Via Epia 800 motherboard with onboard nic, compact flash plugged into ide, cdrom, monitor, keyboard, etc. Bios: acpi enabled and disabled, pnp enabled and disabled, all other accessories disabled except onboard nic.
I have used the "physdiskwrite" thing with monowall previously and was able to write the image to the compact flash card, but I thought the live cd would be easier or more intuitive for me.

If you run the embedded version the output will be at the first com-port. You need a nullmodemcable and a terminalapp to configure it from there first.

I thought I read that if there are no modifications, the default settings of 192.168.1.1 are used and I would be able to connect to monowall right away without using the nullmodem/terminal program.
But, now I am using the pfSense live cd and dont know what the steps are.
Does it just boot and automatically install/format a hardrive or compact flash?
Thankyou for replying

You first have to assign interfaces unless you use a wrap or soekris. Ater that the unit is up and can be accessed at LAN. If you want to install it to hdd you can do so at the shellmenu. However, this should everything be pretty obvious if you look at the shell while booting. It asks for Interfaceassignment automatically and delivers the shellmenu after that with the install option.

The live CD just boots and runs off the CD. There is an option to install it (option 99, I think) once it is running. If you do not run it , it will die at shutdown.

If you install it to CF on a normal PC (ie its not a Soekris) you need to change the /etc/platform from pfSense to embedded (this is not officially supported but works - it is required so that continuous writed to your CF dont melt it down).

Just give it a shot - its quite easy at this stage. Dont worry cause you wont blow anything up.
