Title: repurposed router
Post by: MiXeDeMoTiOnS on February 09, 2015, 01:38:36 am
I'm trying to experiment with pfsense before I do an all out hardware purchase but I don't want to buy all new hardware yet to get a feel of it's capabilities. However are there any enterprise or consumer grade routers that can be flashed or erased to upgrade to pfsense?

I believe you can install it on some of the old WatchGuards, see here for more details: https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/PfSense_on_Watchguard_Firebox

They're basically just low power PC's, the kind of spec that often gets replaced and thrown out. If you're just looking to experiment get an old PC. throw in a network card or two and away you go.

If you don't have an old computer handy one of the $100 refurbished ones from NewEgg.com or the like does well. You might even decide to just keep using it for your main machine.
