PPTP / Definitive Pfsense as PPTP client answer needed
« on: February 17, 2014, 12:09:15 pm »
I've previously been running an OpenWRT based solution. Due to fairly heavy demands I'm placing on the system with multiple VPN tunnels operating 100% of the time, both IPSec and PPTP, I've decided to upgrade the hardware I'm using to one of the new Intel Rangeley SOCs. It's a Supermicro A1SRi-2558F solution with 16GB of RAM (yes overkill, but RAM is cheap) and 128GB SSD.

Since this is a much more powerful platform than my previous one, I've of course thought of using Pfsense. I'm struggling to find a definitive answer on PPTP client support though. I'd appreciate it if someone could tell me the exact status of PPTP client support in Pfsense.

One of my PPTP client tunnels from my OpenWRT box is a PPTP tunnel to a VPN provider that I use to get access to a small subnet in a different country that is geoip filtered. I do not use this tunnel for security - in fact I don't care about the security, so PPTP's brokenness is immaterial to me. It's a routing solution- I simply route all packets destined for this subnet through the PPTP tunnel.

The provider I use is about the only one who has a reasonably performing solution for this country. As a result, whatever I use to replace OpenWRT must support using Pfsense as a PPTP client and allowing me to route a single subnet through the tunnel as well as applying appropriate WAN-side firewall rules to traffic transiting the tunnel.

Would somebody in the know please indicate to me if this setup is feasible with Pfsense (of course I'd be using the new 2.1 beta due to the hardware I'm running on).  Knowing the answer could help me potentially avoid hours of futile install and configure if Pfsense doesn't support this configuration properly. Thanks a lot in advance for any answers.
