IPv6 / Windows 10 and RDNSS
« on: December 01, 2017, 08:28:23 am »
Supposidly Windows 10 supports RDNSS as of the Creators Update. In pfSense I've got my router mode set as Unmanaged and have entered my DNS servers at the bottom of that page. Windows still doesn't get them assigned. Have I got something setup wrong? Should I be using a different Router mode? Or does it just not work with Windows 10 yet?

Thank you,

IPv6 / Windows Update failing using 6rd
« on: November 29, 2017, 08:45:15 am »
Since upgrading to 2.4.1 (and 2.4.2) Windows Update (and Microsoft Store app Updates) does not work unless I go into the network adapter and turn off ipv6. After turning off ipv6 the updates work fine. When I turn ipv6 back on Windows update will keep working for a time (best estimates so far is about 12 hours) then it will stop working again. This happens to all computers in the network. If I take one of the computers somewhere else updates work perfectly fine so the problem is in my network. Here is a list of things I've tried:

  • Complete re-install of pfSense 2.4.2
  • Reduced the MTU
  • Removed all Traffic Shaping
  • Rebooted Modem

I'm using Cable Internet (Start.ca) and 6rd for ipv6. I've been using 6rd for a couple years with them and it has been solid. I've had a colleague who is using the same ISP enable 6rd and do some test and it is working for them. This leads me to believe that it is in pfSense. I have a second location that is using the same ISP and pfSense and they are having the same issue and it happened shortly after the upgrade to 2.4.1. All other sites that I regularly use that are IPv6 work perfectly fine.

This evening I'm going to try installing pfSense 2.3.5 as I know it was working when I was on the 2.3 branch.

Does anyone else have any ideas of what I should test/try next? I've been racking my brain on this one for a couple weeks now and could really use some more ideas. Testing has been a pain since it takes almost a day to know if I have fixed it.

Thank you,

IPv6 / RA second router/subnet
« on: November 17, 2017, 12:19:13 pm »
Is it possible to have the router advertisements advertise as second router for a specific subnet? Currently I've got a gateway/route defined for it in pfsense but if I could advertise the route to my internal network then the traffic wouldn't ever have to hit pfsense.

IPv6 / RA Second Subnet / Gateway
« on: May 26, 2016, 02:01:01 pm »
I've currently got a second /64 subnet and have defined a route/gateway in pfsense to redirect all traffic on that subnet to the second gateway. Is there a way to use RA to advertise the second gateway and it's subnet so the traffic for that subnet doesn't have to all flow through pfsense? (the second /64 subnet is for ipv6 on vpn clients).

Thank you,

General Questions / Gateway Monitoring...
« on: April 26, 2016, 11:42:26 am »
Are there any benefits to having gateway monitoring enabled besides being able to graph the gateway response time/availability? Are there any downsides?

Thank you,

IPv6 / SLAAC and AD DNS Servers
« on: April 13, 2016, 12:43:32 pm »
In pfSense 2.3 is it possible to have it hand out my AD DNS servers via IPv6 while keeping SLAAC addressing and using Track Interface?

Hope this question makes sense, thank you.

Virtualization installations and techniques / HyperV Bufferbloat...
« on: September 03, 2015, 01:46:18 pm »
I've got pfSense 2.2.4 running in Hyper-V 2012 R2. It's running smooth but I'm playing around with trying to reduce my bufferbloat (since dslreports speedtest now tests it). If I run the speedtest from a virtual machine connected to the same virtual switch that the pfSense LAN side is connected to it has no bufferbloat. When testing from any other machine that is externally connected to that vswitch there is bufferbloat. Is there a setting somewhere that I should be playing with (either in Windows or pfSense)?

To test if it was the virtualization on it's own that was the problem I build a dedicated pfSense box to do some tests and when I plugged it in to the internet and ran test through it my bufferbloat was more. I've also got nic teaming on my lan side and to see if that was the issue I disabled teaming and just connected one nic to the vswitch and no difference.

Does anyone have any ideas as to lowering my bufferbloat? I just know that in trying to reduce my bufferbloat I'm going to end up learning many new things about pfSense and routing :)

Thank you.

Virtualization installations and techniques / PowerD and Hyper-V
« on: January 08, 2015, 05:59:25 am »
I'm running the latest 2.2 build in Hyper-V 2012 R2 and it works amazing. My questions is does having PowerD enabled or disabled make any difference in Hyper-V? I've tried it both ways and don't notice any differences in either performance or power consumption. This would make me believe it doesn't really do anything in a virtualized environment and the virtualizer will be the one deciding how best to manage power.

Just thought I would throw this out there.

Thank you

2.2 Snapshot Feedback and Problems - RETIRED / error message on dashboard
« on: January 07, 2015, 09:21:08 am »
I just upgraded to the Wed Jan 07 05:33:55 CST build and it now displays the following error in the Dyn DNS Widget right after the ip address:

PHP ERROR: Type: 8192, File: /usr/local/www/widgets/widgets/dyn_dns_status.widget.php, Line: 62, Message: Function split() is deprecated

This appears to be only cosmetic and everything (well at least for how I use it) is working great.

Thank you for pfsense (the best router/firewall I've ever used),
David

2.0-RC Snapshot Feedback and Problems - RETIRED / PPTP VPN Server
« on: July 11, 2011, 01:41:39 pm »
When setting up a PPTP VPN Server would it be possible to enter say WAN (the name for the interface) as the server address instead of just typing the IP. This would be helpful for those of us with IP's that can change.

Thank you.

First let me say that the new version 2 is amazing. I've noticed increased speed within my environment. Now on to the issue. Since the install my RRD Graphs are no longer logging information and on the Dashboard it no longer gives my CPU usage. I'm running the i386 build on a P3 1GHz. If I go to System Activity on the Diagnostics menu it does show my CPU usage.

Thank you for such an amazing product.
