Multi Lan setup do not work properly.
« on: November 08, 2017, 08:22:26 am »
Hello.

I have build a pfsense box thereís having 1 wan (a few more to com as fail over) and 3 lan connections.

My setup is made so that my dhcp server is on my 1 local network and it gives ip addresses to the other networks as planed.
The thing is now that I have a apple backup device on one network and a MacBook on another network and they canít find each other.

How do I fix this??

Put them on the same layer 2 would be the simple solution.  Apple devices are designed for users that only have one network ;)  So they tend to use multicast discovery.. That is great for the typical user.  But they should also just have simple way that you can put in the fqdn of the device your wanting to talk to and list what ports/protocols need to be open so it can work across segments/vlans..

When you say apple backup device do you mean something running time machine - like an airport extreme or something?

Sorry for The delay..
I have been ark do to internet problems.

But yes. The backup solution I have on the secondary network is a apple airport time capsule gen 2 in bridge mode with no WiFi do to its only function is backup device for my Mac book.

I will try and see if I can make some kind of setup on the airport to multicast it self or maybe bridge them in the pfsense box.

why would you need to anything other than plug it into your lan network.. Do you not have a switch with a port open?

In short.
It is because I have a lab network witch I use as my primary connection do to the WiFi connection part there.
Then I have isolated my web server subnet and then I have my private subnet where my time capsule is.

And to keep WiFi connections to a minimum have I deactivated the WiFi in the time capsule and only use the one in the lab subnet witch holds the DHCP,  DNS server and much more.

here
https://dan.langille.org/2017/04/20/accessing-your-time-capsule-when-on-a-different-subnet/
Go to Finder, press Command-K which pops up the Connect to Server window. afp:// is the protocol

Just use the IP of your time capsule or fqdn.. Setup up your firewall rules to allow AFP.
