Installation fails to disk over 8GB (2.4.2)
« on: January 05, 2018, 06:51:24 am »
Hello,

I have huge problems to install pfSense from memstick image (2.4.2) Memstick boots fine and it installs pfSense to any 8GB SD card, but if I try to use bigger disks like 16Gb or 32GB SDHC cards the installation fails. Same if I use 16GB or 32GB msata disks.

Fact:
1. installation media works
2. 8GB:SDHC card works
3. +8GB SDHC cards fails
4. +8GB msata disks fails

I can see that there is failures in umass ((probe0:umass-sim0:0:0:0): CAM status: CCB request completed with an error)

I just don't see why? Is there problem with HW/BIOS or pfSense installer?

System information:

Unit:
APU3B4 / GX-412TC 4GB

FreeBSD/x86 boot
Default: 0:ad(0p3)/boot/loader
boot: PC Engines apu3
coreboot build 07/24/2017
BIOS version v4.6.0
4080 MB ECC DRAM

SeaBIOS (version rel-1.10.2.1)

File: Installation process

Additional information.

I made successfully installation with APU1 to 32GB msata disk. I moved that disk to APU3 and it boots fine and works fine. Only the installation fails in APU3. BIOS issue? Tried latest coreboot 4.0.11.rom (http://pcengines.ch/howto.htm#bios) Same results.

No, I have not.

But for starters you should really test the drives for errors. The msata drive should support SMART, the SDHC card could be more troublesome to test, but there are ways.

FreeBSD (11) is very sensitive to I/O errors, I have an 8GB Kingston SSD (yes, it's old!) that "works", it can even pass some SMART tests, but pfSense installation crashes as it cannot write data to the drive at some point. In a way it is a good thing that the OS will not accept faulty drives/media.

Hi, thx for reply.

All disks are straight out of the box. All brand new ones. It's only the installation that fails in one point. Now I have used my "old" APU1 unit to install pfSense and then moved disk to new APU3 unit. Then disks works just fine. Thats why I wonder if there is an issue with installer or need to tune delays for SD/msata???
